Using the Setup Wizard

Specifying the title, instruments, and beginning time and key signature.

The Setup Wizard is how you start scores in Notepad. Each page in the wizard allows you to quickly specify all the basic score elements.

In this lesson, you will learn how to

  1. Set the title, composer, and copyright information
  2. Choose the instrumentation
  3. Set the Key and time signature

Step 1: Set Title, Credits, and Copyright

Launch NotePad and the Setup Wizard appears automatically. Or, you can also choose FileNew. Now enter the basic score information. (Of course, you can always add or change anything you set in the Setup Wizard later.)

Setup Wizard Page 1 - What it Does:

NotePad displays the information about your music as you enter it here.

To specify the title and composer:

  1. Type the title, “Scarborough Fair” and then click the Composer text box and type “England.”
  2. Click Next.

Step 2: Select your instruments

Next, select a family to choose an instrument and double click the instrument to add it to the score.

Wizard Page 2 - What it Does:

This window shows you the various instruments available to you. 

To select your score instruments:

  1. Select "Keyboards" in the left column and then double-click "Piano" in the middle column.
  2. Select "Chorus" in the left column and then double-click "Voice" in the middle column. You’ll notice that the Voice staff is added below the piano staff. To change this…
  3. Click "Voice" in the right column, and then click the up arrow to the right.
  4. Click Next.

Step 3: Set the time and key signature

Finally, specify standard musical elements, like the time and key signature.

Setup Wizard Page 3 - What it Does:

Set the time and key signature of your piece here.

To specify the time signature and key signature:

  1. Click the icon of the time signature of the piece you are creating, in this case, .
  2. Under "Select a Concert Key Signature," click the Down Arrow next to the Key Signature. Then, click the drop-down menu to the right and choose "Minor." The key is now set to d minor (one flat).
  3. Click Finish.
