Finale can do anything. But make a worksheet fun?

by Scott Yoho 29. July 2010 09:09

When I hear the word “worksheet,” my initial reaction is not the giddy anticipation of fun.  Perhaps I’m not alone in this.

That said, I think students will have fun with the jazz improvisation worksheets included with Finale 2011. These worksheets offer tips to beginning improvisers AND provide students with excellent accompaniment for their explorations.

To find these worksheets, go to:

My Documents > Finale Files > Worksheets > Jazz Improvisation

Here’s how you might use them:

  1. Select a worksheet, based on instrument transposition, clef, and level of difficulty, and email it to your student.
  2. Using the free, downloadable Finale Reader, your student prints the worksheet, then presses "Play" in the Reader to provide accompaniment as they play the concepts presented.

In the excerpt below, the notation seen on the staves does not play back. Instead, a swinging jazz trio plays an accompaniment using Reader’s built-in sounds.

Even if you don’t have an interest in teaching jazz improvisation (or improvising yourself), the construction of these files is clever and provides a few examples of Finale’s flexibility.

Can you figure out how the accompaniment music was hidden? Can you determine why the visible notation doesn’t play back?

The first person who can answers both questions correctly gets a free Finale T-shirt.

Nice, I'll have to try that tonight when I get home from work.

The jazz trio comes from the band in a box rhythm section feature that uses the chords to provide accompaniment... and the visible notation won't play back if you apply a patch that changes the intstruments key velocity to zero!

I don't have the file, so I can't figure out the workings by looking into it, but I can guess...

[1]
The accompaniment music was either
1) a hidden staff or hidden staves if the audio is Finale-generated, or
2) Imported audio file (added audio track) if the audio is recorded, or
3) just built in with the chords

[2]
Visible notation is linked to an instrument that is either
1) muted (via Instruments List window), or
2) has no MIDI or VST/AU patch assigned to it

Allow me to revise my answer to the first, since I just noticed that you said it was Reader's built-in audio (synthgms2.sf, I assume)

The swinging trio is probably made of 3 hidden staves.

The accompaniment staves (piano, bass, drums) were hidden using the Staff Tool and applying the "hide staff" style.

The visible notation doesn't play back since the tracks are muted.  Un-muting the tracks allows playback.

Thanks in advance for the lovely t-shirt! (I hope!)

We can hide the accompaniment music by selecting the Force Hide Staff Style in the Staff Tool. And hearing only the accompaniment by muting the solo instrument in the Instrument List window.

Use the hidden staves tool to hide the accompaniment music. Going to Window -> Instrument List -> then muting the visible notation instrument will prevent the visible notation from playing back, therefore only having the accompaniment music play by itself. Also, using the mixer to mute will also provide the same results.

Thanks to everyone who sent in an answer! The specific answers I was looking for were:

1. The accompaniment music was hidden using a Staff Style (specifically one of the “Force Hide Staff” styles).
2. The visible notation was muted in either the Instrument List, Studio View, or mixer.

Daniel was the first to indicate the staff was hidden with a staff style. He also indicated that the notation was muted, but didn’t offer how or where this is done.

Luis not only added the name of the staff style, but he also correctly identified the Instrument List as one of the places you can mute staves.

I think both Daniel and Luis deserve a free shirt.

I’d ask that they both send me an email, letting me know their shirt size and where I should send their shirts: syoho@makemusic.com

Thanks again to everyone who commented. Best wishes for the weekend,

Awesome - thanks Scott & Finale!  (I'll send you an email shortly Scott.)

Using the "force hide staff" option in the Staff->Edit Staff Attributes menu is indeed the best way to accomplish this (I do it all the time when arranging Latin genres - I add José Luis Cortes' Latin percussion (via the plugin) and then select "Force Hide Staff" on any percussion tracks that I don't want to appear on the score.  However, when I looked at the worksheet file in my version of Finale (2011) on a Mac, this option wasn't checked on the three accompaniment tracks.  Instead, it was accomplished by applying the "Hide Staff" staff style (#12)...  Or am I missing something?  Nevertheless, I agree that Luis deserves a t-shirt Smile

Also, for what it's worth to future readers, the quickest way on a Mac to bring up the mixer (to mute & solo instruments as well as adjusting pan and volume) is Option+Command+M - it also works while playback is in progress Smile  I guess I must have forgotten to specify how to get the mixer dialog since it's just a shortcut away - Finale's shortcuts are so natural to me now, I almost don't even know I'm using them.  I just think "mixer" and up it comes... LOL

It will be cool to sport a Finale T-shirt - looking forward to it!

Accompaniment music hidden by Hide Staves command. The printed music does not play back as the instrument setting has been set to "Mute"
