Quick Percussion Changes in Finale 2011

by Justin Phillips 15. July 2010 06:51

Expanding upon the improved percussion notation features introduced in Finale 2010, Finale 2011 now allows for quick percussion doubling or instrument changing on the same staff.

A new playback effect was added to the Expression Tool which allows users to change the Percussion MIDI Map, changing the way Finale handles the playback of the percussion staff.

Need to switch from drumset to an orchestral percussion instrument on the same staff?

No problem.

First, create an expression that assigns the Percussion MIDI Map to playback your desired library:

Then create a Staff Style to adjust Staff Attributes (like the number of staff lines) and your Percussion Layout (which controls playback as well as which notes appear as options when you enter notes).

Nice feature, I write a lot of marching and concert percussion and this will be really useful!

Wow!  This is kind of a game changer for me and A LOT of my colleagues! I wish I would've known about this feature earlier (it didn't 'click', I guess, when I saw this line in the WHAT'S NEW section:

"Easily change between pitched and non-pitched percussion by changing percussion playback maps on any staff anywhere in your score"

I wish it was also in the product video demo.

Sort of along the same line (maybe?):

Is there a way to have a percussion map also associated with a melodic instrument?  I'm thinking about the VDL mallet instruments where there are various cymbal samples at the top end of the instrument.  Is there a way to map those few notes (I'd like them to have an 'x' notehead and be on the 'G' space on top of the treble clef).  As of now, I have to have a version of the score to hear the cymbal sounds, then I have to go back and create a version for printing: drag the notes down to the appropriate spot (or just re-enter the note), then change the note head.

Thanks for this blog.  It's really been nice.

cgilmore,

Yes, you can do that!  Using Staff Styles, you can create a Percussion Layout change to move the cymbals to whichever staff position you like.

I'm trying that (creating a staff style that applies another MIDI percussion map), but it's not applying the layout change to the new staff.  It is changing other aspects, like the number of staff lines and note-head font, but that's it.

Sorry if I'm making this blog more like a customer support zone.  If you'd like, I wouldn't mind moving to email instead.

Thanks
