To change Percussion MIDI Maps mid-score

If a staff requires a change from one non-pitched percussion instrument to another, and the new percussion instrument requires a different Percussion MIDI Map for proper playback, do the following to switch Percussion MIDI Maps.

  1. From the Window menu, choose Instrument List. Note the channel of the percussion staff you would like to change. Also, identify an unused channel in the bank. (For example, if there are four staves set to channels 1-4, channels 5-16 are available).
  2. Click the Expression Tool  image\Expression_Tool.gif, and double-click the point in the percussion staff that requires the new Percussion MIDI Map. This is the first beat of the new percussion instrument. The Expression Selection dialog box appears.
  3. Choose the Miscellaneous category and click Create Misc. Expression. The Expression Designer dialog box appears.
  4. Type "Ch#" where # is the number of an unused channel.
  5. Check Hidden so that this expression does not appear in the printed score.
  6. Click the Playback tab. The playback options appear.
  7. For Type, click the drop-down menu and choose Channel.
  8. For Set to Value, enter the number of the unused channel identified earlier.
  9. Click OK, then Assign. The expression appears in the score. You have just added a channel change. Now, you also need to add another expression to change to a new Percussion MIDI Map.
  10. Double-click the same point in the score as before. The Expression Selection dialog box appears.
  11. Type the name of the Percussion MIDI Map. The font, size, and style is not particularly important since this expression is only for a your reference on-screen and will not be printed.
  12. Check Hidden so that this expression does not appear in the printed score.
  13. Click the Playback Tab. The playback options appear.
  14. From the Type drop-down menu, choose Percussion MIDI Map. The Set to Value radio button appears and is selected.
  15. Click the "None (Built In GM)" drop-down menu and choose the desired Percussion MIDI Map. The options here are the same as those you would encounter when choosing a Percussion MIDI Map in the Instrument List. You also have the option to specify a pass by checking Play Only on Pass and typing a the value (e.g. "2" for second time only). See Repeats (barlines and text indication) for details on defining repeated sections for display and playback.
  16. Click OK then Assign to add the Expression. The Percussion MIDI Map you selected will now be used for this percussion staff when playback reaches this point in the score.
